NORTHLAND FLOODS

For writing, We have been learning about report writing so we have chosen to do the report writing on The Northland Floods. Here is my writing about the Northland Flood. Also, we have been learning about third person, and cut and pasting then writing it in our own words.

By Mahina

Introduction

The Northland Flood was 220mm in height in less than 24hrs. The water was rising up into peoples homes so they had to evacuate to higher ground. Floods can cause animals to float away and can lead to death. It was raining for 3 days. The power of floods can totally tear away the top layers of soil. It may start in the middle of a paddock. The flood happened on July the 17-19th. Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods don’t necessarily have to start in a small creek or stream. It may start in the middle of a paddock.

Pollution

The flood caused heaps of pollution problems like sewage mixed with flood water. People weren’t allowed to drink their water and because of all the rubbish caught up and pushed down rivers. This flood had taken deceased animals and unwanted foods along that got stuck in paddock fences and around houses. The water collects rubbish and unwanted foods that make it stink. But it's really just the waste water in the sewer going into the lake or flood’s the road. It is shortening our water supplies and producing dirty water into our water pipes.

Erosion

The flood was causing erosions too. The flood was causing landslides and slips. Landslides can cause destroying animal habitats. Also it’s because the amount of power that the flow of water brings is often sufficient enough to totally tore away top layers of soil. Floods rise above the average water level that lead to landslides. Floods cause erosion from the amount of power of the water flow that tends to rip and tear apart the earth. The erosions can also cause lives taken. When the flood happened it was carrying a lot of rubbish. Then when the flood finished it left the rubbish behind and it was everywhere on peoples doorsteps, roads, and inside homes. So they had to evacuate and go somewhere else.

Damage

People who were living in Northland had to evacuate, roads closing, property's destruction of crops, loss of livestock and decline of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases. One person has claimed that it could reduce flood risk if you plan environmental security. People couldn’t get home because of eroded roads and damages. So they had to stay where they were and wait until they were allowed to go back home.

Conclusion

In summary, this flood caused financial disasters like pollution, erosion, and damages. Also nobody could go anywhere because of the disasters. But I have stated all my opinions of this one-in-a-500 year flood.

  1. Cool Mahina. Yes, you were learning to paraphrase INSTEAD of cutting and pasting. You have written in your own words and your paragraphs are grouped into main ideas, well done. Next step lead sentences and variety of sentences types to add sophistication to your work. Keep up the good work.
